The South African literature industry reached different milestones last year, and this year promises to be bigger and better. Besides the many exciting new festivals and fairs that were hosted last year, we also saw the publishing of many game changing books such as ‘Nwelezelanga,’ ‘My Own Liberator,’ ‘Exit,’ ‘Born A Crime,’ amongst many others. While some of us are still recovering from the high of last year’s euphoria, Pan Macmillan SA goes and gives us one hell of an announcement.
Today, while going through my emails stressing about other things, I open my one of them to find a Pan Macmillan South African announcement saying that they have acquired World rights to publish former Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela’s memoir. Yes, you read it right. Advocate Madonsela, uBabes We Public Protecting, is publishing a memoir.
The announcement says the book is “a personal memoir covering the remarkable life of one of South Africa’s pre-eminent and most respected leaders – as an individual, as an advocate for gender equality and the advancement of women, as well as in the often controversial role of Public Protector.”
For those of you who have been living under rocks and don’t know who Advocate Madonsela is, our former PP is an award winning superwoman whose investigations, while she was in office from 2009 to 2016, include the alleged impropriety by Andre Odendaal, the erstwhile Midvaal Municipality Chairperson; Nkandla; Bheki Cele; a company and trust fund linked to Julius Malema; the role of Helen Zille in a communications tender by the Western Cape Provincial Government; Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde; and State Capture. She has also been awarded Doctor of Law degrees from the University of Stellenbosch, the University of Cape Town, the University of Rhodes and the University of Fort Hare.
Commenting on her upcoming journey, Advocate Madonsela said: ‘I’m grateful for this opportunity and excited to take a journey back into the life I have lived, with the hope that what I share will have meaning for others.’
Terry Morris, who is the Managing Director of Pan Macmillan South Africa, said: ‘In times of political turbulence, Advocate Madonsela has been a beacon of truth, a voice for the ordinary citizen and a tireless defender of the Constitution. Pan Macmillan is honoured to work with Advocate Madonsela to bring her important and inspiring story to the world.’
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m supper excited about this one. I can’t wait for this book to come out.
